Blues Music: Echoes and Origins
This course introduces the origins and early history of blues music as a living tradition rooted in Black American culture, led by musician and social-justice advocate Joe Seamons. Through early recordings and discussion, students explore how blues grew from work songs, spirituals, and other Southern musical forms and was popularized by female-identified singers. Blending online and in-person sessions, the course highlights the music’s cultural impact, expressive power, and ongoing relevance in the face of systemic injustice.
